Tales of soldiers and civilians. By: Ambrose Bierce. (Original Version): Tales of Soldiers and Civilians is a collection of short stories written by Ambrose Bierce. by Ambrose Bierce Tales of Soldiers and Civilians is a collection of short stories written by Ambrose Bierce. Published in 1891, the 26 stories detail the lives of soldiers and civilians during the American Civil War. His famous story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is included in this collection. In the preface to the first edition, Bierce maintained that the book had been "denied existence by the chief publishing houses of the country." He credited the eventual publication of the book to his friend, Mr. E. L. G. Steele, a merchant from San Francisco, who was listed with the 1891 copyright.[3] In 1898, Tales was republished along with other stories by G.P. Putnam's Sons under the title In the Midst of Life.George Sterling, in the introduction to a later (1927) edition, noted that as a result of "obtuse critics and a benighted public," the book failed to become the sensation Bierce had expected. The original publication contained nineteen stories, while those in later publications increased in number; 1898 to 22, and 1909 to 26.The original nineteen stories were retained in the 1898 publication, We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Good. The Heritage Press reprint of the Limited Editions Club edition. Edited with an introduction by Joseph Henry Jackson & illustrated with wood-engravings by Paul Landacre. Bierce is best known as the author of "The Devil's Dictionary, " and to have vanished without a trace in Mexico in 1913. Rubbing to cover edges with a label shadow, lacking the slipcase. Still a good reading copy with no interior markings.
The stories are a cross between Edgar Allen Poe and Stephan King with a touch of the Twilight Zone thrown in for that added trip to the unknown. He takes what seems like life experiences and turns them into tales of the bizarre where the reader is left to form their own closure. Easy reading and a journey into the pits of humanity
