All truth is revealed or made known by God. In the language of Hooker: " Of God it must be; either as those things sometimes were which God supernaturally revealed, or else as those things which men find out by help of that light which God hath given them unto that end." To this it may be added, that the eulogy which the Saviour pronounces on Peter would have no necessary connection with a peculiar direct inspiration. This would only show that God had granted to him a special and particular favor. It is evident from John vi. 69, that St. Peter's faith in Jesus as " the Christ, the Son of the living God," was not the result of a sudden impulse upon his mind. It had existed a considerable time. This is certain from the evangelical narrative, which reaches back more than two years, Ecclesiastical Polity, Book 3, Section 2. 128 Peter's Answer Not Inspired. and mentions Peter as known by Christ even before he entered on the public duties of his office, and as obeying the divine call to follow him in the first year of his ministry: John i. 42, Matt. iv. 20. It is also proved by the proper force of the perfect tense of the original verbs here employed. This expresses not merely faith existing at the moment, but formerly produced and still continuing.
