In 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby, the witty, gregarious editor of French "Elle", suffered a stroke that left him totally paralyzed, able to communicate only by blinking his left eye. By doing so, he was able to compose this book--at once a record of appalling suffering and a testament to the endurance of the human spirit.

I did enjoy this book but recommend that you see the movie version first as I did. Then you have a vivid picture of what is actually happening.
He was incredible as he still used his mind to "go" places where he wanted to "go".

Unique perspective on loss
I saw the movie first and was very impressed but then I had to read the book. The book is even more amazing. So hard to believe that anyone could have the courage to write this testimony of loosing their control of their own body. I thought it was a wonderful and enjoyable read.

Required reading for healthcare providers
Each chapter stood alone. And at the end of each chapter he brought closure in his mastery of words to end with a sting of wit. His perception and ability to express his feelings about his situation are certainly what most patients think, but are not able to articulate... even if they can talk. This should be required reading for all healthcare providers, from the doctor to the nursing aide.

great book
This book is so touching. I loved this because it is very humbling. To tell the truth I was not excited about reading it at first. I had to read it for a college class. I fell into it after the very first page. It is so moving and really makes you think about how precious life is. He is a strong man with a good heart. I would read this again as well as recommend it to my friends.
