This is the first book in an extremely satisfying fantasy trilogy. While there is much that will be familiar to the fan of fantasy - a scullery boy who has great adventures, an uneasy relationship with an ancient elvish race, a princess and a dragon - Williams makes these things his own. The series is so well-written and the characters well-crafted that it is a delight to read.

Fantastic Adventure
This work by Tad Williams is the best fantasy adventure since professor Tolkien. This is my third time reading the story of mooncalf Simon and all the wonderful characters caught up in the quest for the 3 swords and the "false messenger".My only gripe is the book itself wasa book club edition but that's my own fault for not reading the description more closely...if you haven't embarked on this journey yet wait no longer. It's an unbelievable ride.....enjoy
