Excerpt from The Evolution of the Money Market (1885-1915): An Historical and Analytical Study of the Rise and Development of Finance as a Centralised, Co-Ordinated Force The survey extends over the period from about 1385 to 1915. It begins with the rule of Richard II. And ends in the reign of George V. For the period between 1385 and 1694 - the date of the establishment of the Bank of England - the treatment of the subject is not more detailed than is necessary to exhibit the origins and nature of all the factors of the Money Market in their proper focus, by way of preparation for the subsequent scrutinv of their gradual gravitative response to the inexorable authority of a centripetal sway. After the date of the establishment of the Bank of England the essay becomes rather more elaborate in its recital of fact and inference. In other words, Part I. Is simply introductory to the main topic. No phenomenon, be it Spiritual, intellectual, physical or financial, will ever be properly understood without some knowledge of the sources whence it was originally pro duced, and of the forces by which its early development was encompassed. The rest of the study is, in effect, a brief history of the first hundred years of the modern Money Market.
