Not only has the Author considered it his duty to borrow largely, from the various works on Gauging to which he could obtain access but wherever he could meet with information, bearing the stamp of authority, he has not scrupled to make use of it; considering that he was thereby carrying out the principles laid down in the reports recently made to Government upon this important branch of the revenue. If, in any instance, he has omitted to acknow ledge the authority used, he hopes it will be attributed to inadvertence, rather than to any design of arrogating to himself the honour due to Others.
