Important work
This important work by one of Britains foremost military historians does much to refocus our attention away from the Western Front and onto the popularly neglected Eastern and non-European theatres of the global conflagration that has, more than WWII, shaped the world we live in. While some historians see these strategic theatres as sideshows to the main event in Flanders, Strachan reminds us that the events in the 'East' led to the collapse of three great empires (Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Russian, though the Red Empire was later to replace this) and gave us the collection of modern nation states in middle Europe, the Middle East and Eurasia that we know today. An excellent and very accessible work with wonderful colour plates in the hardback edition.
