Seller's Description:

Size: 5x1x8; 2012 first edition, association copy (1977 Nobel winner Roger Guillemin), Yale University Press (New Haven, Connecticut), 5 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches tall light green cloth hardcover in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, dark green lettering to spine, illustrated with black-and-white drawings and photographs, viii, 386 pp. Laid in is a card reading, 'From the Private Collection of Dr. Roger and Lucienne Guillemin, Nobel Laureate, 1977, Salk Institute, La Jolla, CA. ' Roger Charles Louis Guillemin was a French-American neuroscientist who received the National Medal of Science in 1976, and the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1977 for his work on neurohormones. Also laid in is a letter from the publisher sending him the book and thanking Guillemin for providing a blurb for its back cover. Guillemin has creased the tips of a couple of pages he marked. Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy-clean, bright and unmarked-in a rubbed dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. ~SP30~ [2.0P] In this fascinating and bold discussion, a renowned neurobiologist serves as guide to the most complex physical object in the living world: the human brain. Taking into account the newest brain research-morphological, physiological, chemical, genetic-and placing these findings in the context of psychology, philosophy, art, and literature, Changeux ventures into the unexplored territories where these diverse disciplines intersect. Changeux's book draws on Plato's notion that the Good, the True, and the Beautiful are celestial essences or ideas, independent but so intertwined as to be inseparable. Placing these essences within the characteristic features of the human brain's neuronal organization, the author addresses unsolved questions in neuroscience today. With imagination and deep insight, Changeux illuminates the evolution of the brain and deciphers what new developments in neuroscience may portend for the future of humanity. About the prior owner: From the library of Roger Guillemin (1924-2024), a French-American neuroscientist. In separate research laboratories, Guillemin and neuroscientist Andrew Schally (1926-2024) discovered the structures of Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) and Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). They were jointly awarded the 1977 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for this discovery. In addition, Guillemin received awards from the National Academy of Sciences, 1974; the Canada Gairdner International Award, 1974; the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, 1975; the Dickson Prize in Medicine, 1976; the Passano Award in Medical Sciences, 1976; the National Medal of Science, 1976; and from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1977.
