Near Fine. First edition. Octavo. 247pp. Frontispiece and many photographs of church notables. Publisher's brick cloth gilt. Contemporary owner name front fly, small flecks of spotting on rear board, else near fine. Phillips (1858-1951) was born enslaved in Milledgeville, Georgia, the son of a minister and one of 12 children, ten of whom survived to adulthood, and many of whom became ministers as well. He went to Atlanta University and several other institutions for postgraduate study in religion, and was also active in education and temperance. When he retired from a pastorate in Washington, DC, Frederick Douglass, along with several others, made a farewell address. Very scarce, particularly in the first edition.
