For if you conceive a quadrangle or-an obPong, having its sides drawn in such a manner, that while two ofaits-' opposite angles are dilated, the other two are contratilzed; then the dilated angles will appear obtuse, and the contrafited, acute. And the' appellation of rhombus T seems to have been imposed from motion. For if you conceive a quadrangle moving after the manner of a rhomhus, it will appear to you changed in order, according to its angles:: just as if a circle is moved after the manner of a sling, it willimmediately exhibit the appearance of an ellipsis. But. here you may perhaps enquire concerning the quadrangle, why it has this denomination P' and why the appellation of quadrangle may not be applied toother quadriiateral. figures, as the name of triangle is common to all-2 those which are neither equiangular nor-equilatexal, and in-like man ner os quinquangles or-pentagons; for the geometrioian, in these, adds only the particle an eguilaferal triangle, or zz quinquangle, -zvbicb it equilatvral and equiangular, as if these could not be otherwise than; such as they are? But when he mentions a quadrangle, he immediately i-ndicates that it mufl be equilateral-and reftangular. But the reason of this is as follows: a-qnadrangle alone has the befi space, both H78 'COMMENTARIES OF PROCLUS. according to its sides and angles. For each of the latter is right, intercepting a measure of angles, which neither receives-intention nor remission. As it exccls, therefore, in both rcspects, it. dcserved-ly obtains a cotnmon appellation..
