Like Tess of the d'Urbervilles or The Woman in White, this Victorian novel is replete with plot twists, years-long detours, providential meetings, villainy, and a great deal of drama. It differs from most other Victorian novels in that the main characters who meet and fall in love are both men, one an adopted son with a dark secret and Dickensian background who has taken on a new identity, and the other an uptight doctor with a strong religious background.

Not sure why they're showing the brown cover of the first edition. The cover of the new edition by a different publisher is a gorgeous one with two men's faces and a flaming phoenix. I read the original from the library and bought the second out of curiosity to see what changes could have improved it. I thought it was great as it was. The changes were, mostly, in details but just enough that they did make a difference.
This is a great romance with a twisty plot and the best-written characters I've seen for a long time--even the minor characters are engaging. You'd be happy with either edition, I think, but the new one has a slight edge, so I suggest getting it.
Yes, the main characters are gay but the sex scenes are handled with grace and style. Even if you don't read gay books, read this one.
I've looked for more books by Sims but only found a free read. I hope there will be some more in the future!
