David Carroll is a thoughtful writer who has spent a lifetime studying and writing about turtles. His carefully executed drawings reflect his love of all living things, and some of his sketches of the most common subjects--be it a reed or a clump of branches--reminds us there's beauty to be found all around us. Carroll's sadness about disappearing natural environments is genuine; his critiques are without rancor and always hopeful we can do better as human beings. In 2006 Carroll was given the MacArthur Foundation's genius award--and deservedly so.
