Good. 12mo-over 6¾"-7¾" tall. Previous Owner Markings; Light Creasing on Front, Rear Covers, Spine; Front, Rear Covers, Spine Lightly Chipped; Spine Slightly Cocked; Edges Lightly Soiled; Moderate Yellowing Due to Age. BOOK NUMBER: Universal Best-Seller Library 124. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Peter C. Newman, one of Canada's most distinguished political commentators, was born in Vienna in 1929. After emigrating to Canada with his family, he was educated at Upper Canada College, and then at the University of Toronto, where he achieved both his B.A. and M.A. in Economics. Mr. Newman has been in his time a gold miner, a department store magician, a jazz drummer, and a naval officer. Collecting modern jazz records is still one of his main interests, and boating is his favourite way of spending a weekend or vacation. His first book, Flame of Power (1959), went into three printings, and a paperback version. His second, Renegade in Power (1963), was even more successful, and is considered the definitive work on John Diefenbaker and his times. It was one of the best-selling books ever published in Canada. Before joining Maclean's in 1957, where he spent the Diefenbaker years as Ottawa Editor, he spent five years as assistant editor of The Financial Post. In 1964 he became Ottawa Editor of the Toronto Daily Star. He was appointed Editor-in-Chief of that distinguished newspaper in 1969. He is married to Christina McCall Newman, the well-known magazine writer and editor, and now lives in Toronto. EXCERPT: "...Many of the tensions that plagued Lester Pearson's time in office were legacies from his predecessor, John Diefenbaker. But the two seasons in Canadian politics were as different as the men who gave them their labels. The Diefenbaker Years resembled nothing so much as the voyage of the 'Titanic'-an inevitable rush to disaster, with the ship of state sinking at the end in a galaxy of fireworks, brass bands playing and the captain shouting hysterical orders to crewmen who had long since jumped overboard. The Pearson period, in contrast, was more like the voyage of some peeling, once-proud, now leaky excursion steamer, lurching from port to port, with the captain making up the schedule as he went along, too busy keeping afloat to spend much time on the bridge..." AWARDS: A Book-of-the-Month Club Selection. REVIEWS: "...This is the most exciting and best-written book on Canadian politics so far published."-Bruce Hutchison, Ottawa Journal. "After I was through in Parliament, I burned my official documents in my garden. When I opened Peter Newman's book, there they were staring out at me."-Judy LaMarsh, former Liberal Secretary of State. "With his new book, Newman will instigate a revolution-a revolution which will explode our smothering sympathy toward Canadian politics and politicians; a revolution which will brutally shake the politicians themselves loose from their insulated indifference to people and to reality."-Farley Mowat, St. John's Evening Telegram. "One of those 'lucrative keyhole, strip-tease contributions, if not to the history, at least to the gossip of our times'."-The Right Honourable Lester P. Pearson. "Newman is the political psychotherapist to a nation. And nothing 'second-hand' about it. It's the ugly mirror of Dorian Grey in full regalia. Sure, the Liberals don't like Distemper much. All the more reassuring to the rest of us."-The Canadian Forum. "Distemper picks up the story of the tumultuous Pearson-Diefenbaker rivalry from Renegade, and is a better book...The author's documentation is awesome."-Time Magazine.

SUB-TITLE: Canadian Politics in Transition: 1963-1968. SYNOPSIS: This book is a chronicle of five years in a nation's history by a journalist who was close to the political action of the time. Not a bloodless audit but an angry journal, it conjugates the contradictions of the Liberal Government and traces the roots and results of the alienation between the people and the politicians that marked the period. Peter C. Newman's talent in reconstructing the inside story of Canadian politics is unique. His style obliterates the distance that usually separates the non-fiction writer from his subjects. The reader is never in the position of watching Newman watch the politicians. Instead there is a direct rapport and involvement with the action taking place. Here is a breathtakingly frank recreation of the stumbling march of events and the personalities that danced darkly across the Canadian political stage between 1963 and 1968. It is a brilliant journalist's distillation of all the frantic elements-some obvious, some still obscure-that made up the most exciting half-decade in Canada's political history. Peter C. Newman is the reporter and author whose hard-hitting and controversial book on John Diefenbaker made Canadian publishing history. At thirty-nine, Newman has established a formidable reputation in several branches of his craft. He has gained a national following first as Ottawa Editor of Maclean's magazine, then as the syndicated political columnist of the Toronto Daily Star. His book on John Diefenbaker, Renegade In Power, sold a phenomenal 100, 000 copies on the way to becoming Canada's all-time political bestseller. The Saturday Review described its U.S. edition as "vigorous, unafraid and in the tradition of the best political writing on this continent." The New York Times called it "a clinical, almost psychiatric analysis of the complex and devious character of the most controversial figure in Canadian politics." Educated at Upper Canada College and the University of Toronto, where he obtained a Master's degree, Newman has worked underground as a gold miner in northern Quebec and served as a lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy. Appointed Ottawa Editor of the Toronto Daily Star in 1964, his syndicated column is now carried in twenty-nine Canadian newspapers with a circulation of nearly two and a half million, making him the most widely read commentator in the country. The winner of a National Newspaper Award for feature writing, he was co-author of a ninety-minute television documentary that won the CBC's "Wilderness Award" as the best production of 1967. His wife is Christina McCall Newman, Ottawa Editor of Saturday Night magazine; they have a daughter, Ashley. Newman is now at work on two future books, including a history of the Trudeau period in Canadian politics.
