Seller's Description:
Good. The author's first book originally published in 1865. London and New York: Harper & Brothers, 1904. First British edition for the trade. Red cloth with bright pictorial front board of "The Jumping Frog". 12 illustrations by F. Strothman, collated, complete. Spine is faded and dulled (probably from reading), head lightly worn. Twain's "Jumping Frog" generated an enduring love of his humor in England. Copy of "Isham Percy Smith from A. F. S. Christmas 1906", neatly inscribed on front endpaper. We speculate with regret that this is the Major Isham Percy Smith who died in WWI (1917). An exceptionally bright front board, with very light 'tracks'. Light soil to rear board. Binding is tight, elegant typography of text. Regarding the subtitle of this edition: upon discovering a French translation of this story by Thérèse Bentzon published in 1872, Twain back-translated the story into English, word for word, retaining the French grammatical structure and syntax. He then published all three versions in 1903 under the title "The Jumping Frog: in English, then in French, and then Clawed Back into a Civilized Language Once More by Patient, Unremunerated Toil".
