None. Very Good Indeed in Very Good Indeed jacket. A two volume set of Piers the Plowman by William Langland. Edited from numerous manuscripts with preface, notes, and a glossary by Walter W. Skeat. Volume I contains the text and Volume II the preface, notes and glossary. William Langland (ca. 1332 – ca. 1386) is the conjectured author of the 14th-century English dream-vision Piers Plowman. The attribution of Piers to Langland rests principally on the evidence of a manuscript held at Trinity College, Dublin. This directly ascribes 'Perys Ploughman' to one 'Willielmi de Langlond', son of 'Stacy de Rokayle, who died in Shipton-under-Wychwood, a tenant of the Lord Spenser in the county of Oxfordshire'. Other manuscripts also name the author as 'Robert or William langland', or 'Wilhelmus W. ' (most likely shorthand for 'William of Wychwood'). The poem itself also seems to point towards Langland's authorship. At one stage the narrator remarks: 'I have lyved in londe...my name is longe wille' (B. XV.152). This can be taken as a coded reference to the poet's name, in the style of much late-medieval literature. Although the evidence may appear slender, Langland's authorship has been widely accepted by commentators since the 1920s. In a blue cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine, in unclipped dustwrappers. Externally, generally smart, lightly rubbed in places. Dustwrappers are sound with slight rubbing and some discolouration to the spines. There is some wear to the extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with some minor staining to the pastedowns and end-papers. Very Good Indeed.
