Seller's Description:
Illustrations by the author. 8vo. Pale green cloth with gilt and dark green lettering and pictorial stamping. xvii, 552pp. Pictorial title page, 29 full-page plates, numerous small marginal line drawings, pictorial endpapers. Very good. Binding faintly edgeworn (mainly at spine head/tail) and spine faintly age toned; a few leaves roughly opened, but tight and internally near fine. "Over Two Hundred Drawings" (boasts title page) grace this attractive first edition--actually 202, for two side-by-side front flyleaves bear an original well-rendered ink sketch showing two lads in Boy Scout-type uniforms, one with hands behind back eying the viewer and the other with rifle slung over shoulder walking away with dog at his side; we do NOT believe this is in Seton's hand, but rather an early owner's rendering of the "Two Little Savages" of the title. On page xvii ("Part I / Glenyan and Yan"), the author boldly inscribes and signs it "To E. Ording / with best wishes of / Ernest Thompson Seton / 5 May 1940" and adds his usual pawprint trademark. Early private owner has lightly inked in white "adventure / for boys / TWO" at base of spine--visible but not offensive. Quite an interesting copy and one wonders if recipient "E. Ording" to whom Seton inscribes it was the artist who extra-illustrated it. A very scarce title and here inscribed by Seton with unknown artist's nicely-done ink drawing of the title characters.

Seton was one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America. This book, published originally in the wee 1900s was one of my Father's (born in 1906) favorite tomes. Think of it as an original Fox Fire book. There is everything from how to make a war chief's headdress to how to construct a teepee correctly. It is wood lore gleaned from the Indian nations, and probably has to be taken putting aside all the PC stuff - it was written for adventurous boys at the turn of the last century so take it at face value.
I don't know if children could appreciate it these days, but when I was a child, it provided endless distraction - even for a girl. We lost Dad's copy in Hurricane Camille. This one is signed by the author which makes it sort of precious.
