This book analyzes short stories structurally. This is the most important aspect of writing, and the one most writers fail at--especially contemporary writers, who either studied commercial fiction and believe Jack Bickham's or Syd Field's theories, or went to MFA programs and spent 6 years studying how to say nothing with style.
Its one failing is that many of the stories are boring, because they deliver a bare theme by itself, rather than (as I believe should usually be done) a theme that's conveyed by a story with a plot.
