This is one of very few modern books on Vietnamese. The vocabulary and expressions are modern and focus on everyday colloquial and functional use (shopping, ordering food etc.). The grammar is well-explained and the vocabulary totals about 800. A nice trait is that it also shows how to pronounce the Southern dialect, so you can choose yourself which dialect to use when you read the dialogues and learn the vocabulary. The exercises cover translation, using grammar, and vocabulary. I'm pleased with the number of exercises and the level of challenge they present. My only complaint is that I would have liked some "good-old" grammar-drills, I find them very useful in getting accustomed to grammatical structures. The book looses a star because it has no such grammar-drills and also because in some parts of the dialogues they use words and expressions not actually covered or explained before, an unpleasant surprise. Overall though, I still recommend this book/package.
