"Marine Ecology: challenges of the Anthropocene is a synthesis of the current knowledge of the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems, and their responses to the anthropogenic impacts they are subjected to. This book is aimed at a global audience, and designed to provide insights on how marine ecosystems function, how they respond to natural and human-made drivers, and strategies for the sustainable management and conservation of the natural resources, including the human communities that depend on them. The book is divided into 2 sections. The first section addresses essential aspects of oceanography and ecology, including physical and chemical factors, aspects of marine biodiversity, and the functioning of marine ecosystems, including biotic and abiotic interactions and energy flux in trophic webs. The second section focuses on anthropogenic impacts on marine environments. This section is organized in chapters separated by major taxa, from marine algae to mammals. Each chapter begins describing the diversity of organisms of each group, their adaptations and factors underlying their distribution. Then, it explores impacts in these taxa imposed by human activities, and how these may produce changes that ripple throughout their biological spectrum of activities and variables. At the end of each chapter, management and mitigation measures for conservation and sustainable use of marine resources are explored"-- Provided by publisher.
