"The Way of Karate" by George Mattson is a very good introduction to a very unique dicipline. This effort by Mattson to set forth what he had learned while stationed in Okinawa during the 1950's gives us a glimpse at what this unique style was like before the American karate crase of the 1970's.
The style itself, named Uechi Ryu at one time, was introduced into Okinawa in the early part of the 20th century by Kanbun Uechi. Kanbun, a fugitive from Japanese imperial conscription, fled to the Fuchow area of China in the late 1890's. While there, he became aquainted with this unique form of self defense.
Eventually after leaving China and returning to Okinawa, Kanbun introduced his Chinese Methods to the Japanese and Okinawans.
The style itself has a much more "Chinese" approach to it's techniques, than what one usually thinks of when remembering Okinawan Karate.
For one just begining Karate study, it is very good. It is also of interest to anyone who is a historian of Okinawan Karate, or a practitioner of Uechi Ryu style karate; and gives us a good idea of what this style was like earlier on.
