Organized by the elements of fiction and comprised primarily of writing exercises, this text helps students hone and refine their craft with a practical, hands-on approach to writing fiction. This text features several exercises on each particular aspect of fiction--characterization, point of view, plot, dialogue, etc. Every exercise is introduced by an opening paragraph that provides insight into and information on that element of fiction. The introduction is followed by instructions for completing the exercise, the "objective" of the exercise, and frequently by a student example. The text is rounded out by an anthology of contemporary and highly teachable short fiction.

This compendium of brief articles by a variety of instructors is a treasure trove of writing exercises that cover the gamut from first sentences, plotting, characterization, revision and so much more. The pages are peppered with witty/insightful quotes by renowned authors.
Do not be deceived by the book's size. You're getting 500 pages of useful information.
Highly recommended for anyone who is serious about growing in the craft, the art of storytelling.

An useful book to a beginner writer
What if is an interesting book for whow is now begging to read about the craft of writing, or just wanna to masterize his skills with helpful exercises. In comparison with other books, much more brilliant about writing itself, like the wonderful Teoria y tecnica del cuento, from E. A. Imbert, the book is very disapointing. However, I don't think that the authors of What if intended do go much deep in theorical or philosophical problems of writing. It's a book of exercises, nothing more then that.

it juices up your brain.
First make sure to get at least the 2nd edition of this book-- I accidentally ordered the first ed. which is still good, but 300 pages shorter and missing all the short stories in the 2nd edition and beyond. It's not a "here are five steps to write a novel." Instead, it helps you think like a writer and juice up some hot ideas in your head.
