Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered the holiest month for Muslims worldwide. It is a time of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community, observed by over a billion Muslims around the globe. The month holds deep religious significance as it is believed to be the time when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by the Angel Jibril (Gabriel). Significance of Ramadan Spiritual Cleansing and Renewal - Ramadan is a time for Muslims to purify their hearts, seek forgiveness, and strengthen their relationship with Allah. Commemoration of Quranic Revelation - The month is significant because it marks the period when the Quran began to be revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Self-Discipline and Worship - Fasting is a means of developing self-control, patience, and gratitude, helping believers grow spiritually. Increased Charity and Compassion - Muslims are encouraged to be more charitable, helping those in need and practicing kindness. Fasting in Ramadan (Sawm) One of the central aspects of Ramadan is Sawm (fasting) , which is an obligatory act for all adult Muslims (with some exceptions). The fast lasts from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib) and includes refraining from: Eating and drinking Smoking Engaging in sexual activity Negative behaviors such as lying, gossiping, or arguing Fasting is not just a physical practice but also a spiritual one, meant to encourage self-reflection, discipline, and closeness to Allah. Who is Exempt from Fasting? Certain groups of people are exempt from fasting, including: The sick and those with medical conditions Pregnant, breastfeeding, or menstruating women Travelers Children who have not reached puberty The elderly or those who are physically unable to fast Those who cannot fast due to temporary reasons are required to make up the missed fasts later. If someone cannot fast at all, they may give Fidya (feeding a poor person for each missed fast). Daily Routine During Ramadan Suhoor (Pre-dawn Meal) - Muslims wake up before dawn to eat a meal called Suhoor before the Fajr (dawn) prayer . Fasting Period - Throughout the day, Muslims continue with their daily activities while abstaining from food, drink, and negative behaviors. Iftar (Breaking the Fast) - At sunset, the fast is broken with dates and water , followed by the Maghrib (evening) prayer and a full meal. Taraweeh Prayers - After the night prayer ( Isha ), special long prayers called Taraweeh are performed in mosques, where portions of the Quran are recited. Acts of Worship and Good Deeds During Ramadan, Muslims increase their acts of worship, including: Reading and reciting the Quran - Many Muslims try to complete the entire Quran during the month. Praying extra prayers (Taraweeh & Qiyam-ul-Layl) - These are performed at night. Giving charity (Zakat & Sadaqah) - Muslims are encouraged to give generously to those in need. Seeking forgiveness and making dua (supplication) - It is a time to repent and ask for blessings. The Last 10 Nights & Laylat al-Qadr The last 10 nights of Ramadan are the most sacred, as they include Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Decree) , which is believed to be the night the Quran was revealed. This night is considered better than a thousand months (Quran 97:3), and worship during this time brings immense rewards. Eid al-Fitr (The Festival of Breaking the Fast)
