This book examines the impact of the industrial society on women and their expectations, values, personalities and achievements in the labour force. It explores the changes that have occurred in western industrial societies in terms of the female sex role and the personality of women, the quantity and quality of positions available in the paid labour force and the occupational achievements of women. The book not only describes what is happening, it attempts to explain why these changes have come about and their effects on women and society in general, aiming to link the psychological origins of female achievement to macro-social change. The data report in this volume were colleccted over a period of twenty years in four countries and on three continents. Running through the book is the theme that the industrial society stresses individualism and achievement which is seen to strengthen women by encouraging achievement and weakening the ideological underpinnings of sexual segregation in the workplace. Bernard Carl Rosen is also the author of "Adolescence and Religion", "Achievement in American Society" and "The Industrial Connection".
