Anton Chekhov was the author of hundreds of short stories and several plays and is regarded by many as both the greatest Russian storyteller and the father of modern drama. Harvey Pitcher studied at Oxford and Leningrad, and in 1963 started the Russian Department at St Andrews University. Since 1971 he has been a full-time writer.
