From 2000 to 2010 he was Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and from 2010 to 2018 he served as Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for Culture. He is Special Advisor to ICCROM, Member of the Advisory Committee of the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, and Founding Member of OurWorldHeritage.
