George Bancroft
George Bancroft (1800-1891) was a historian, statesman and diplomat. He served as U.S. secretary of the navy and, briefly, acting secretary of war and was the ambassador to Prussia and the German Empire. During his time in Germany he negotiated a series of treaties that first established the international recognition of the right of expatriation, a principle later incorporated into the law of nations. During his time in Germany he negotiated a series of treaties that first established the international recognition of the right of expatriation, a principle later incorporated into the law of nations. They are known today as the Bancroft treaties in his honor. He is best known today as the first important historian of American history, a reputation established by his influential multi-volume History of the United States, from the Discovery of the American Continent (first edition 1834).
