John Wu
John Ching-Hsiung Wu (1899-1986) was a Chinese intellectual, jurist, and writer born in Ningbo, China. His vast political and academic career included service as head judge of the Shanghai Provisional Court, an adviser to the Chinese Delegation to the United Nations, and as Minister Plenipotentiary of China to the Holy See. John Ching-Hsiung Wu (1899-1986) was a Chinese intellectual, jurist, and writer born in Ningbo, China. His vast political and academic career included service as head judge of the Shanghai Provisional Court, an adviser to the Chinese Delegation to the United Nations, and as Minister Plenipotentiary of China to the Holy See. He received a fellowship from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and he did research and taught law at many universities, including Harvard, the University of Paris, the University of Berlin, Northwestern University, Seton Hall University, and The College of Chinese Culture. His books, written in Chinese, French and English include works in the fields of philosophy and law, and a spiritual autobiography, "Beyond East and West." John Wu earned a Bachelor of Laws from Soochow University eventually serving as Dean of its Law School. He earned a JD from The University of Michigan Law School and began over a decade long correspondence with Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. He received honorary doctorate degrees in law from Boston College, The University of Portland, and St. John's University.
