He was a Senior Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Brown University, USA (1994-5), and a recipient of the prestigious Charles Wallace Fellowship at the School of Oriental and African Studies (University of London), the Alexander O'Vietor Memorial Fellowship (at Brown University) and twice recipient of the Alfred Bell Memorial Fellowship at the Forest History Society (at Duke University).
