This text aims to provide an accessible introduction and reference to opto-electronics for advanced undergraduate and graduate-level students, assuming the background of a first course in semiconductors and electronic devices. It starts with a description of the properties of compound semiconductors, quantum mechanics, semiconductor statistics and carried transport properties, optical processes, and junction theory coverage. Each device is presented in a dedicated chapter, and the properties of quantum well lasers and distributed feedback structures are also discussed. The work goes on to describe the principles of coherent detection, phototransistors, modulated barrier photodiodes, and metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodiodes, and concludes with a review on Opto-electronic Integrated Circuits (OEIC).
