Since its commercial introduction in 1986, the X Window System from MIT has become the standard window system for technical workstations, providing a common graphics programming interface on equipment from such diverse manufacturers as Apollo, Digital Equipment, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Sun. This has made it possible for programmers to write portable graphics applications and has opened up new opportunities for software vendors who wish to write and sell software on multiple platforms. Recently, the X Window System has also been made available on the Apple Macintosh and IBM pc's. As more and more personal computers are introduced with the processing power to run UNIX operating systems, "X" is becoming increasingly important to end users. This book addresses the need for an Xtoolkit textbook appealing both to UNIX programmers and also to less-experienced pc users who are trying to familiarize themselves with this technology. The book is written in tutorial format covering the Xtoolkit intrinsics routines in the order in which they would be used in an application. Examples and illustrations feature the OSF/Motif toolkit, but can be generalized to other toolkits. Special chapters address the features and benefits of each popular industry toolkit in detail.
