This book seems like Parker was trying to set the "atmosphere" for the Cole series. I think it misses the mark as to the profanity that is in it. I didn't live back then, so I don't know for sure, but the profanity just seems over the top and for my "ears" was a little too much, and much more than the rest of the books in this series. The plot however, is outstanding and sets up the next two books to come. It is a must read for those who want to read the series, and while enjoyable, it is not my favorite of the four books.

must-read now
I read this book before reading Parker's Appaloosa (i.e., in the wrong order). I must say that this is even better than the book it follows. This book tells a lot about the times, the place, the people; and it tells an awful lot about good writing.

New Year's Resolution to Read!!
I first saw the movie "Appaloosa" directed by and starring Ed Harris along with Vigo Mortensen. When I noticed that the story was from a book by Robert B. Parker, I was intrigued. I had read some of the Jesse Stone novels and loved them, so I thought, what the heck, I am going to track this book down.
After reading the book and loving it, I noticed that there were some other books containing these characters. I bought "Resolution" and "Brimstone" at the same time and was very happy I did so.
These books are fast reads, super fast. I am not the fastest of readers, but it only took me a few hours to read each one rather than a few days. I guess it is because these men are truly men of few words. They don't often mess around with their feelings. Life simply "is" for them. Life involves, getting a job, maintain the peace, stay alive, search for a loved one, make choices based on the people forcing an issue and make them fast.
If you want a closer look into the Wild West and how towns got their starts, then get all these books about Virgil Cole and Edward Hitch. You will adore them!!!
And kudos to Robert B. Parker for his thoughtful creation of these men and their life situations.
I would love to read more about their journeys and lives!!
BRING IT ON!!!!!

Parker Still Parker
I am a BIG fan of all things Parker. Have been for years. Spenser, Jesse and Sonny. But, I have never been one to search out any westerns. I had decided to try "Appaloosa". It was still Parker! Still at his best. "Resolution " just continues the tradition and the story with the same main characters, doing what they do best.
Liked this so much I finally borrowed a copy of "Gunman's Rhapsody" also.
