It's one of those books where the author has worked very hard on making it interesting and ambiguous enough but not much in the way of engaging. It's written well, technically. The words "lyrical" and "haunting" appear a bit in top reviews for it, though I found it more along the lines of desperate affect rather than lyrical, and there was nothing haunting about the tale at all. By the last quarter of the way through it was obvious the ambiguity in re: the narrative reliability of the teller was the whole gimmick, which made it that much more of a trudge to finish. Again, it wasn't poorly written, but it was a waste of time to read.
