The idea behind compiling this book was borne from a workshop which was held in July 1987 at Teesside Polytechnic. The workshop aimed to bring together both theoreticians and practitioners in the field of distributed computing systems. It was decided to present the book as a reference book rather than merely a workshop proceedings. The book is intended for those who are already working in the distributed computing field and for those who have just started, for example MSc and PhD students.
