With his victories at Trenton in 1776, Princeton in 1777, and Yorktown in 1781, George Washington certainly deserves a great deal of credit. However, armies must be paid for and supplied in order to fight. How the Continental Army was financed, and the man who financed and supplied it, are the subjects of Charles Rappleye's thoroughly documented biography of Robert Morris (1734-1806). During the first part of the American Revolution, Morris served on two important committees. One committee obtained war materials and the other instructed America's diplomats and agents in Europe; one of these agents was Silas Deane. Morris was later appointed to be the Minister of Finance during the American Revolution and would go on to establish the Bank of North America. He also signed the Constitution and served as a Unites States Senator from Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania politics, factions in the Continental Congress, the emergence of the Nationalists (James Madison and Alexander Hamilton were the two most prominent), and the challenges Morris faced funding the army are some of the major themes in this book. The book concludes with a short analysis of the historiography of Robert Morris and the American Revolution. The chapter on the battle of Yorktown is especially interesting and I like how the author presents the correspondence between George Washington and Robert Morris. In short, Robert Morris: Financier of the American Revolution is a great book about one of our Founding Fathers as well as the financial and logistical aspects of the American Revolution.
