In With Burning Hearts Henri Nouwen seeks a fuller understanding of the Eucharist through the story of the disciples on their way to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). Like these disciples we, too, come together in our brokenness before God, hear the Word and the profession of faith, and recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread. From mourning to discernment, from invitation to intimacy, and from community to the charge to go forth and witness: With Burning Hearts calls us to experience all of this journey, to know that what we ...

I had heard of this particular volume before, but never read it before now. I am currently pursuing a doctorate degree and this was required reading for the class. What a phenomenal book especially if you are looking for a deeper understanding of the Eucharist and how it can provide strength for the daily walk of a Christian. Nouwen uses the Emmaus road passage (Luke 24:13-35) as the backdrop for his words. He then breaks down the passage into smaller sections which become the chapters for the book. Not only does Nouwen do an excellent job writing, he presents the reader with many thought provoking questions and statements. I have read several of Nouwen's other writings, but for me (at this point in my life) this is his best effort. It was a book that was hard to put down once I started reading. It convicted me because of my lack of understanding regarding the power of the Eucharist and it is one that will be on my yearly reading list.
