Demi (born Charlotte Dumaresq Hunt, 1942) is the author/illustrator of over 300 children's books, many of which have spiritual and religious themes. Now well in her 80s, Demi continues to write and to paint with admirable energy and dedication to her chosen path. It has been a pleasure to read and review Demi's books over the past several years.
Adopted from an old French legend, Demi's most recent book, "The Heavenly Juggler" tells the story of Barnaby, who is poor and struggles to support himself by his talent for juggling. It is difficult for Barnaby especially in Winter when the ground is cold and hard and few people are out and about. A kindly prior of a monastery, sensing Barnaby's goodness, invites him to the monastery to become a monk. The monks spend their days in various services honoring the Virgin Mary, including studying, writing books, composing music and making art.
Barnaby feels he has nothing to offer. Then one day, he has an idea and decides to go to the church, a practice he follows daily. The other monks become curious about his activities. When the prior and two senior monks come one day to watch Barnaby, they see him performing his juggling before a statue of the Virgin. As Demi writes: "in her honor he was performing these feats, and placing at her service all his knowledge and skills." As the monks come in to attempt to take Barnaby from the altar, the statue comes to life, and Mary herself wipes away the sweat from Barnaby's forehead. "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God", say the monks, and Barnaby becomes known as the The Heavenly Juggler.
This is a beautifull little tale with lovely illustrations of Barnaby's colorful clothing and juggling tools, the brown cassocks of the monks, the the blue and white of the dress of the Virgin Mary. It is suitable for children between 4 and 8 years of age. The book tells a story chidren and their adult readers can understand and discuss as it suggests there are many paths to God and each person must make use of the gifts he or she possesses.
I thought of Demi and her continued efforts in age to pursue storytelling. I also was reminded of a story from the Jewish tradition in which a man who lacked the talent for scholarly or business pursuits makes his living by going to the marketplace every day to perform as a clown. It was the teaching of the rabbis that by bringing laughter and joy to people, the clown had won a high place in the World to Come.
This book is published by Wisdom Tales, which publishes children's books with the stated goal of "sharing the wisdom and beauty of cultures from around the world with young readers and their families." Wisdom Tales has published many books by Demi over the years and has kindly sent me a copy of this book to review.
