ESSEX AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY, Several gentlemen met at Topsfielcl on Monday, Feb. 16, 1818, Ichabod Tucker and Daniel Cummins, both of Salem, being moderator and secretary, and organized the Essex Agricultural Society; Col. Timothy Pickering was elected the first President and continued in this office for ten successive years. Incorporated June 12, 1818, its first exhibition was held at Topsfield, Oct. 5, 1820. These have been continued annually either in the month of September or October, in several towns of the county, usually twice successively in the same place. This Society was the first in the state to publish an annual report of its doings which has been continued about sixty years; these Reports contain much information of value to the agriculturist. A Library was commenced in the autumn of 1849 by the purchase of the library of the late lamented Rev. Henry Colman, numbering five hundred and eighteen volumes. These were first deposited in the city Hall, Salem, the city clerk, Joseph Cloutman, acting as Librarian. In 1853 the library was removed to the Court House, and in December, 1862, to Plummer Hall. The books circulate among members only. Dr. George B. Loring's address, September 30, 1868, contains a full account of the Society, whose officers for 1881-2 are: Benjamin P. Ware, of Marblehead, President; George B. Loring of Salem, J. J. H. Gregory of Marblehead, Thomas C. Thurlow of West Newbury, James P. King of Peabody, Vice-Presidents; Charles P. Preston of Danvers, Secretary; Gilbert L. Streeter of Salem, Treasurer. ESSEX SO.
