L. Doctorow, and economist John Kenneth Galbraith, Iron Mountain would eventually take on a life of its own. Long out of print, the Report suddenly reappeared in "bootleg" editions more than twenty years after the original publication. Complicated small book. When it came out it was taken as a secret government report on why we continue to have wars and what might be problems in actually creating peace. It turned out later that the supposed government sponsored report was actually a hoax, but all the same it remains a brilliant analysis of the persistence of war and some of the challenges of replacing it with peace.
