Kate Chopin's The Awakening is a compelling look at a courageous woman of late 19th century America trying to break through the restraints and sexual inhibitions of her time. It is engagingly written and a joy to read. It is right up there with Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary, a true American classic by a woman of Irish descent married to a Frenchman. Five stars all the way.
