Robert Ruark was the writer Hemingway wanted to be. The Old Man and the Boy is an account of his youth under the mostly watchful eye of his grandfather, who was an "old man" of a type who is seldom encountered today... although they were fairly common a century ago.
I buy copies of 1st editions and present them to young people who would otherwise never benefit from such a lifestyle.

A book for Men... not women
This is a collection of classic growing up, coming of age tales by a country boy from South Carolina who became a well-to-do, famous author who never forgot his roots. If you have any love for hunting, fishing and crusty old men who know more than most college professors, this is an awesome book. Most men will adore this book, most women will think it is a syrupy fairy tale... they just don't get it. so when you read these mini-reviews look to see the gender of the reviewer. If you grew up on Field & Stream, Outdoor Life, and/or Sports Afield in the 1950's, this is a must read!!!

A vanished America
One of the great American memoirs of all time. The "Old Man" of the title gives his grandson a glimpse of a vanished world of outdoor skills and character, of kindness and horse sense, and what it means to be a man. A must-read.

Great Values Passed On
Although a little tough to get into, it is a great story of passing down values and skills soon to be forgotten.
